A new water dispute has surfaced, with Jammu and Kashmir’s Chief Minister Omar Abdullah rejecting a canal project that would supply water to Punjab. Addressing the issue in Jammu, Abdullah cited a lack of water resources in J&K and the prevalence of drought conditions as justification for his decision. He asserted that his government would prioritize the state’s water needs. The Shiromani Akali Dal has responded critically to Abdullah’s statement, with Dr. Daljit Singh Cheema calling it inappropriate. Abdullah also noted that Punjab has access to water under the Indus Water Treaty, while Jammu and Kashmir received no help when it needed water. The proposed canal, which is 113 km long, is the subject of this ongoing dispute.
