Iran is reinstating visa requirements for Indian citizens, ending the visa-free travel facility that was in place since February 2024. The shift, effective November 22, 2025, is a direct response to a disturbing rise in fraudulent schemes, including fake employment opportunities and the subsequent abduction of Indian nationals. The move aims to protect individuals from exploitation and dismantle criminal networks operating through the visa waiver.
The Iranian mission in India issued a statement confirming the suspension for ordinary Indian passport holders. Reports indicate that individuals were enticed to travel to Iran using the visa-free access, only to be victimized upon arrival. These scams often involved promises of jobs or transit to other countries, culminating in kidnapping and demands for ransom. The Indian government has been actively engaged with Iranian authorities to address these incidents and ensure the safety of its citizens. Travelers are strongly advised to be vigilant and to disregard any offers that promise easy travel or transit through Iran via unofficial channels.
