Chess prodigy Abhimanyu Mishra, 16, has achieved a new milestone by becoming the youngest player to defeat a current world champion in a classical chess match. The historic moment occurred in Round 5 of the FIDE Grand Swiss, where Mishra triumphed over D Gukesh. Mishra, already celebrated for being the youngest to defeat a grandmaster, competed against Gukesh in an Italian Opening. A critical moment arose when Gukesh advanced his g-pawn to g4 on move 12, altering the dynamics of the game. Recognizing the shift, Mishra launched a strategic piece sacrifice in the early middle game, placing pressure on Gukesh. Although the Indian GM fought valiantly, the intricate endgame demanded flawless execution. After a grueling 61 moves, Mishra secured the win. Despite the momentous victory, Mishra remained grounded, expressing his eagerness to refine his skills further. This stunning win not only left the chess world in awe but also reinforced Mishra’s reputation as one of the most promising young players globally.
