The Asia Cup 2025 brought a mix of emotions for Sri Lankan cricketer Dunith Wellalage. Just as Sri Lanka celebrated a victory over Afghanistan, Dunith received the devastating news of his father, Suranga Wellalage, passing away due to a heart attack on September 18. The announcement was made by Russell Arnold during post-match commentary. Team officials then informed Dunith of his loss. The team manager offered support, with images of the moment circulating widely. The late Suranga Wellalage was remembered as a talented cricketer who captained Prince of Wales College during Arnold’s tenure as captain of St. Peter’s College. Sanath Jayasuriya and the team manager consoled Wellalage. The news came right after Sri Lanka’s six-wicket win against Afghanistan. Kusal Mendis led the charge with 74*, and Kamindu Mendis scored 28, securing the win in the 19th over. Afghanistan’s Mohammad Nabi played a key role, hitting five sixes off Wellalage’s bowling. Sri Lanka will now compete in the Super 4s against India, Pakistan, and Bangladesh.
