The Indian cricket team is introducing the Bronco Test to evaluate player fitness. Former cricketer Manoj Tiwary has made a statement that is generating significant discussion. Tiwary suggests that the implementation of the Bronco Test, a fitness assessment derived from rugby, is potentially a maneuver to exclude players such as Rohit Sharma from the team. Sharma, who is 38 years old, is aiming to participate in the 2027 World Cup, but a failure in the Bronco Test could affect his chances.
During an interview with Crictracker, Tiwary stated that the Bronco Test could pose a hurdle for ODI captain Rohit Sharma. He indicated that while it’s unlikely that Virat Kohli would be excluded from the 2027 World Cup plans, he is doubtful about Rohit’s inclusion based on the developments in Indian cricket. Tiwary believes the Bronco Test, recently introduced, could be a tool to manage the team’s composition in the future, potentially impacting the selection of players like Rohit Sharma.
Tiwary emphasized the challenging nature of the Bronco Test, questioning why it was introduced now. He questioned the origin and timing of the test, and its impact on Rohit’s place on the team. He stated that unless Rohit Sharma dedicates himself to rigorous fitness, the test could be an obstacle.
The Bronco Test is a demanding fitness assessment used in rugby, considered more difficult than the Yo-Yo test. It involves multiple shuttle runs over 20, 40, and 60 meters, to be completed within specific time limits. The Indian team’s strength and conditioning coach, Andrew Leipus, advocated for the test, emphasizing the importance of running for fast bowlers and other players, over solely focusing on gym exercises.
