Divya Deshmukh, at 19, has achieved a landmark victory, becoming the first Indian woman to win the FIDE Women’s World Cup in 2025. The final, an all-Indian affair in Baku, saw her defeat Koneru Humpy with a score of 1.5-0.5, decided by rapid tie-breaks. The classical games were closely contested, showcasing the skills and strategic acumen of both players. Divya took control in the first game, playing with white. The second game was a close contest, and Divya managed to draw the game. In the tie-breaks, Divya’s composure was key, as she seized opportunities when Humpy faltered under time constraints. Despite facing a formidable opponent in Humpy, who was favored in the rapid format, Divya demonstrated remarkable focus and emerged victorious. The win represents a spectacular year for the young player from Nagpur, including a World Junior Championship win and a gold medal at the Chess Olympiad in Budapest. This World Cup win not only secures her place in chess history but also earns her the 88th Grandmaster title for India, making her the fourth female Grandmaster from India.
