India’s triumph in the Asia Cup 2025 final against Pakistan was marred by an unusual incident. Mohsin Naqvi, the ACC Chief, took possession of the Asia Cup trophy and the Indian team’s medals and moved them to his hotel following the conclusion of the match. This has ignited a significant controversy, prompting a sharp reaction from the BCCI. The BCCI Secretary, Devajit Saikia, commented on the situation, asserting that the Indian team’s decision not to accept the trophy from Naqvi did not give him the right to take it. Saikia criticized Naqvi’s actions as a violation of fair play.
During the presentation ceremony, the BCCI chose not to receive the trophy from Naqvi. Instead, they preferred that the Vice-Chairman of the Emirates Cricket Board present it. Reports indicate that Naqvi, apparently frustrated by this, took the trophy and the Indian team’s medals to his hotel, possibly conveying that the trophy was not meant for India.
BCCI is now prepared to take action against Naqvi. Secretary Devajit Saikia expressed strong disapproval, explaining the Indian team’s rationale for refusing the trophy from Naqvi. Saikia pointed out the ongoing hostilities between India and the nation from which the ACC Chairman hails, which led to the decision not to accept the trophy from him. He found Naqvi’s behavior unacceptable and demanded the trophy’s immediate return. The BCCI is set to strongly condemn the events during the prize distribution and pursue appropriate measures.
