The opening partnership of Ben Duckett and Zak Crawley made history at Headingley. When chasing a total of 371 set by India, the pair achieved what no English opening pair had done in a fourth innings since 1984. Indian bowlers were unable to contain Duckett and Crawley. Both batsmen scored half-centuries and quickly brought England closer to their goal. Duckett was in fine form, and achieved his half-century in 66 balls. This century partnership was the first by an English duo in the fourth innings at Headingley since 1984, when Desmond Haynes and Gordon Greenidge made a 106-run partnership. Duckett and Crawley had put on 140 runs for the first wicket, without losing any wickets. Duckett has become only the second English opener in the past 30 years to score a fifty in both innings of a Test match at Headingley. The last one to do so was Alastair Cook in 2015. Duckett also made a solid 62 runs in the first innings.
