
Fast bowler Freya Davies has retired from the England cricket team. At 29 years old, Davies has made a significant decision to retire from the sport and pursue a career as a lawyer. She played 9 ODIs and 26 T20 matches for England, and the England Cricket Board shared the announcement. Davies has chosen to move away from cricket to focus on her legal career.
Davies’s international career saw her claim a total of 33 wickets. She took 10 wickets in ODIs and 23 in T20s. Her T20 economy rate was a commendable 6.84. She also played in the Women’s 100 competition, taking 36 wickets in 37 matches. In the current season, she took 8 wickets in 8 matches. She will be playing in the Women’s ODI Cup final before retiring.
Davies debuted for Sussex at 14. She was initially prevented from playing senior county cricket because of her age. She took her first wicket against Charlotte Edwards. Davies helped Sussex win the Women’s County Championship in 2013, and also contributed to wins in 2012 and 2015. In 2019, she received a central contract from the England Cricket Board before she had played for the full national team.
Davies balanced her cricket career with her education, attending Brighton College and completing a law degree at Exeter University. She faced financial challenges in pursuing cricket, but her parents’ backing allowed her to continue playing. She took a break from cricket to study law in 2017, but returned to excel in the Super League. Davies hasn’t been in the T20 team for the last two years and hasn’t been included in the ODI team for the last three years, leading to her retirement.
