The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is reportedly planning to hold significant discussions about the ODI careers of Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli. Following the conclusion of the ongoing ODI series against South Africa, key BCCI figures are expected to gather and chart a course towards the 2027 ODI World Cup, with the future of these two prominent players at the forefront.
As it stands, Rohit and Virat are integral parts of the Indian ODI team. However, they are yet to receive concrete assurances about their roles and their potential place in the squad for the 2027 edition of the World Cup. The infrequent schedule of one-day internationals makes it challenging to guarantee spots for established players over such an extended period.
A source within the BCCI stressed the importance of providing direction, stating, “It’s vital that players like Rohit and Kohli are made aware of expectations and how the current leadership sees their contributions. Playing without clear direction can be detrimental.”
Reflecting on their recent performances against Australia, the source commented, “They found their form in the third ODI in Australia, but the series had already been decided and the bowlers had set up the win. Their early matches showed signs of rustiness, which is something that cannot be afforded consistently.”
To aid their preparation and form, the BCCI is also considering advising Rohit and Virat to participate in the upcoming Vijay Hazare Trophy, commencing on December 24. Their involvement in the upcoming ODI matches against South Africa, starting November 30, will be closely monitored as the board evaluates their future prospects.
