As the Asia Cup 2025 approaches, with India and Pakistan set to compete on September 14th, Harbhajan Singh, a former Indian spinner, has expressed his perspective on the match, appealing to the BCCI. Singh believes that the upcoming match should be reconsidered, highlighting the significance of the nation and the sacrifices made for its protection.
During a discussion with The Times of India, Harbhajan Singh stated that the importance of the country’s soldiers, and their families, far outweighs the significance of a cricket match. He emphasized that the government’s stance is that sports and conflict cannot exist in harmony, suggesting that the match should not proceed in light of the ongoing border tensions.
Singh elaborated that cricket is of little consequence until major disputes are resolved. He emphasized that national identity is of utmost importance. He highlighted that the country comes first for everyone, and fulfilling one’s duties to the nation is crucial. He pointed out the courage of the soldiers and the sacrifices they make. Singh referenced the India Champions’ decision to not play against Pakistan Champions in the 2025 World Championship of Legends, following a terror attack in Jammu and Kashmir, as an example supporting his perspective.
The India Champions team had decided against playing Pakistan in the league stage and semi-finals, setting a precedent. Singh’s viewpoint, aligning with many, underscores the need to prioritize national security and the sacrifices involved.
