The India-Pakistan match in the Asia Cup has become a source of significant controversy. Indian cricket fans have voiced their strong disapproval on social media, criticizing the match’s scheduling given the recent events of the Pahalgam terror attack and Operation Sindoor. Calls for a boycott have intensified amid rising political tensions. The match marks the first cricket meeting between the two teams since the conflict earlier this year, further escalating emotions.
During the toss, India’s captain, Suryakumar Yadav, notably avoided the traditional handshake with Pakistan’s captain, Salman Ali Agha. After the captains were introduced, Suryakumar chose not to extend his hand, and Agha showed no reciprocal gesture. He simply provided the team sheet to the umpire before returning to the dressing room. The exchange was devoid of handshakes or any eye contact.
Before the game, Indian assistant coach Ryan ten Doeschate highlighted the team’s awareness of the public’s feelings, and their solidarity with the nation’s emotions. Suryakumar’s conduct appeared to reflect the prevailing mood.
