With Pakistan having already announced their Asia Cup squad, attention turns to India’s team selection, expected on August 19. Reports suggest that Shubman Gill and Mohammed Siraj might not make the cut.
Gill and Siraj were key players during India’s recent England tour. Gill scored 750 runs in the Test series, and Siraj took 23 wickets. However, the Asia Cup is a T20 tournament played with a white ball, unlike the red ball used in Tests. Despite Gill’s IPL form, the selectors may be hesitant to alter the existing opening partnership. It seems likely that Gill and Siraj may not be selected.
A third opener might be included. Yashasvi Jaiswal is a leading contender for that role. The team’s coach’s preferences will also play a role in the final decision. If the coach prioritizes Gill, the Test captain might be selected.
Tilak Varma, Suryakumar Yadav, and Rinku Singh are likely to be included in the middle order. Jitesh Sharma could be chosen as the second wicketkeeper. Shreyas Iyer, who has passed his fitness test, might be included as an extra batsman. But if the team values a player who can also bowl, Iyer may be excluded, possibly opening the door for Washington Sundar or Shivam Dube.
Hardik Pandya is expected to be selected, offering both batting and bowling strength. Jasprit Bumrah is confirmed to be in the squad, leading a pace attack that may include Arshdeep Singh, Prasidh Krishna, and Harshit Rana. It is possible that only one of Prasidh Krishna or Harshit Rana will be selected. Mohammed Shami’s chances of being included in the pace attack are slim.
Kuldeep Yadav, Varun Chakravarthy, and Ravi Bishnoi are reportedly likely to be the spinners selected. Axar Patel is another option. Washington Sundar, who played in India’s last T20 match, could also be chosen, but his inclusion is not guaranteed.
