India’s journey to the Asia Cup 2025 final has exposed a significant vulnerability: poor fielding. Despite strong performances in other areas, the team has shown a concerning inability to hold catches, which is raising questions about their ability to win the championship. India secured its place in the final after defeating Bangladesh in the Super 4 stage. However, the recurring fielding errors pose a major threat to their chances in the final.
India convincingly won all three matches in the group stage and subsequently advanced to the Super 4 stage. Under the leadership of Suryakumar Yadav, the team then defeated Pakistan and Bangladesh. The result of their third match against Sri Lanka has no bearing on their place in the final, but the fielding performance could significantly impact their chances of winning the championship. The fielding has been a major concern throughout the Super 4 stage.
Against Pakistan, India’s fielding was shockingly poor, with five catches dropped and a missed run-out. This resulted in six missed opportunities to take wickets, which is unacceptable for a team of India’s caliber.
This pattern continued in the match against Bangladesh, where India again dropped five catches. Although India won the match, the fielding was a disappointment. Four of the catches dropped were off the bat of Saif Hasan, who scored 69 runs. Such persistent fielding lapses could prove fatal in the final, potentially costing India the Asia Cup trophy.
