A significant blow for India as captain Shubman Gill has been declared unavailable for the second Test against South Africa, slated to commence on November 22 in Guwahati. Vice-captain Rishabh Pant is expected to take over the leadership duties for this crucial Freedom Trophy 2025 match. Gill sustained a neck injury during the first innings of the Kolkata Test, prompting him to retire hurt after just three balls. He was subsequently hospitalized for a thorough medical examination and has been ruled out for the rest of the series. Concerns extend beyond the Test matches, with reports suggesting Gill might also be sidelined for the upcoming ODI series. Team India’s management is reportedly prioritizing his long-term health, opting for a conservative approach to prevent any aggravation of his injury before a packed international schedule. This precautionary rest aims to ensure Gill’s complete recovery and availability for future series. Should Gill miss the Guwahati Test, Pant will lead India in their quest to avoid a series defeat, following their narrow 30-run loss in the opening Test. The injury occurred on Day 2 of the Kolkata Test, with initial assessments pointing towards a potential whiplash injury. Although he was discharged from the hospital and returned to the team hotel with positive initial updates, he was later seen wearing a neck brace, indicating limitations in his neck’s movement. The BCCI confirmed Gill’s travel to Guwahati with the squad, stating that a final decision on his participation would be made closer to the match date. Nitish Kumar Reddy, an all-rounder with pace bowling capabilities, has joined the team and could be a potential candidate for the playing eleven in Gill’s absence.
