The recent Test series between India and England, where the Indian team, led by a new captain and several young players, managed to draw, has sparked discussions about Jasprit Bumrah’s fitness and workload. This topic has divided experts and fans, with some critics expressing their views on the Indian bowler. Former England bowler Monty Panesar believes that Mohammed Siraj’s ability to win matches for India requires a specific strategy concerning Bumrah.
In the five-match Test series, Bumrah played only three matches. It had been pre-decided that he would feature in just three games during the tour. India didn’t win any of the matches Bumrah played in, and he was absent for the two matches where the series was drawn. Siraj took five wickets in each of those two matches, showcasing his excellent bowling. This situation raises questions about relying on Bumrah due to his fitness and workload concerns. The question of whether he should receive special considerations is also being debated.
Considering Bumrah’s importance and unique abilities, various opinions have surfaced. Indian-origin English spinner Monty Panesar shared his thoughts on this matter. In an interview, Panesar was asked if Team India should consider playing without Bumrah or restricting him to overseas matches. Panesar suggested that Bumrah should play all the matches abroad. He stated, “The Indian team can beat anyone at home without Bumrah, but he’s the X-factor in overseas Test matches. They (the captain and coach) can tell him that we don’t need you for home Tests, but we need you for overseas Tests.”
Whether captain Shubman Gill and head coach Gautam Gambhir will adopt Panesar’s suggestion will be clear in the upcoming two months. India is scheduled to play its next two Test series at home, facing the West Indies and South Africa. Whether Bumrah participates in these series or takes rest will provide insight into the team management’s plans. The suggestion echoes Virat Kohli’s captaincy era when Bumrah played all his initial Tests overseas while being rested in India.
