A three-year prison sentence has been handed down to Kiplin Doriga, a 30-year-old international cricketer from Papua New Guinea, following his guilty plea to robbery in Jersey. Doriga, who plays as a wicketkeeper, committed the offense while on the island for the ICC Cricket World Cup Challenge League. On August 25th, shortly before 2:30 a.m., Doriga encountered a woman on Hilary Street in St Helier. Reports indicate he assaulted her, knocking her to the ground, before stealing her mobile phone. The police were notified and conducted a swift investigation, apprehending Doriga the same day. He was subsequently charged with robbery and admitted the offense in Jersey Magistrate’s Court on August 27th. The case moved to Jersey’s Royal Court, where the sentence was passed on November 28th. Authorities highlighted the efficiency of the investigation in identifying and arresting a suspect who had only recently arrived on the island. The incident serves as a significant reminder of the consequences of criminal actions, even for international athletes, and prompts discussions on player behavior during tours.
