A planned visit by Lionel Messi and the Argentinian national football team to Kerala has been called off, much to the dismay of football enthusiasts throughout India. The announcement was made by Kerala’s Sports Minister, V. Abdurahiman, on August 4, ending months of anticipation. The initial plan was to bring the World Cup-winning team to Kerala, with Messi as the main attraction, possibly in October or November 2025. The excitement among fans was palpable, with many eagerly anticipating the chance to see Messi in action. The primary reason for the cancellation was a clash in scheduling. While a sponsor had provided the necessary funds, the Argentine team communicated their inability to make the visit in October. The sponsor was steadfast in their preference for an October match, which forced the event’s postponement. Minister Abdurahiman stated that a future visit could be possible in late 2025 or 2026 if the scheduling and sponsorship terms can be aligned. The Kerala government was prepared to handle all logistical and security expenses for the visiting team.
