Following the retirements of prominent cricketers, questions arose about the future of Indian fast bowler Mohammed Shami. In response to these inquiries, Shami has refuted any claims of imminent retirement. He also took the opportunity to directly address the people who have been speculating about his retirement.
Shami expressed that he intends to continue playing as long as his morale remains strong. “If anyone has an issue, let them tell me,” he said. “Will my retirement improve their lives? Tell me, whose life have I become a hindrance to, that you want me to retire? The day I get bored, I’ll retire myself.” He further added, “Don’t select me, but I will keep working hard. Even if I’m not selected for international cricket, I will play domestic cricket. I will keep playing somewhere or the other.” The 34-year-old cricketer emphasized that he doesn’t believe it’s the right time to retire.
Shami also mentioned his unfulfilled desire to win the ODI World Cup. He stated that they came close in 2023 but didn’t win. He hopes to participate in the 2027 tournament. Speaking about his fitness, Shami mentioned that he has put in significant effort over the past two months. He is dedicated to his fitness and his bowling. He concluded by saying that he still loves cricket and will quit only when he loses interest. Shami last played international cricket in March and was not selected for the Asia Cup. He appeared to struggle with his form during the 2025 IPL.
