The online gaming bill’s passage could see Dream11 stepping down as the title sponsor for the Indian cricket team’s jersey. This legislation restricts online games that offer financial rewards, a move that impacts Dream11. This could lead to the termination of their sponsorship deal with the BCCI, valued at 358 crore rupees. Consequently, the Indian team’s jersey for the Asia Cup might also need a change. The focus now is on potential replacements, with reports indicating interest from several companies. The BCCI is expected to announce a decision soon.
Leading Candidates
Following Dream11’s possible departure, prominent groups like Tata Group, Reliance, and Adani Group are seen as strong contenders. Tata is already involved in cricket sponsorship with the IPL. Reliance Jio is also active in sports sponsorship and broadcasting. Furthermore, the Adani Group has made significant investments in sports.
Other Potential Sponsors
Fintech companies such as Zerodha, Angel One, and Grow, with their strong digital presence, are also interested. Automakers like Mahindra and Toyota could see this as an opportunity to increase their reach in India. FMCG brands like Pepsi, with their long-standing sports connections, are also considering a bid.
BCCI’s Position
BCCI secretary Devjit Saikia confirmed that the board will comply with the country’s laws. The BCCI will follow the government’s policies regarding the restriction of online money-making games. The board will soon announce its decision regarding the jersey sponsorship. If a new sponsor isn’t found before the Asia Cup, starting September 9, the Indian team will play without one. Jerseys with Dream11’s name for the Asia Cup have already been printed, but they won’t be used. Dream11’s deal with the BCCI, worth 358 crore rupees, was signed in 2023.
