The homecoming of Uma Chetry, a trailblazer for Assamese women in cricket and a World Cup participant, has become a focal point of controversy, with allegations that the state government failed to provide an official welcome. Chetry, a wicketkeeper-batter who represented India, returned to Guwahati carrying the pride of her nation and state. However, the airport reception, according to some, was notably devoid of official presence.
The All Assam Gorkha Students’ Union has claimed responsibility for organizing a welcome, stating that their members and a few supporters were the only ones present to honor Chetry. The union has voiced deep dissatisfaction, questioning the absence of government officials and contrasting it with the elaborate welcomes often afforded to other athletes. “Her flight landed at 10:15 pm. She is the first woman from Assam and the entire Northeast to return as a world champion in cricket. But no one from the government showed up,” they reportedly said.
This alleged oversight has drawn sharp criticism from political quarters. Opposition leaders have publicly denounced the state government, arguing that such a historic achievement by a local athlete warranted a significant official reception. They highlighted Chetry’s inspiring journey from a humble background and her role in elevating the profile of the Northeast on the international stage.
In defense, the BCCI Secretary and ACA President have cited reasons for the lack of an official airport reception. They pointed to potential confusion regarding Chetry’s exact travel plans, last-minute scheduling changes made by the BCCI, and the prevailing mood of mourning within the state for a prominent cultural figure. The ACA also clarified that their primary role involves grassroots development and infrastructure, not necessarily crowd management for arrivals.
Chhetry herself downplayed the controversy, expressing that she was not upset and understood potential reasons for the absence of officials, such as the Chief Minister’s busy schedule. She focused on the personal fulfillment of her World Cup dream and the unique significance of her accomplishment. Her coach reflected on her early dedication and expressed hope for her continued success and recognition.
Subsequently, the state’s Sports Minister did meet with Chetry for a felicitation, and official statements acknowledged her contribution to Indian women’s cricket. Meanwhile, her home village in Bokakhat celebrated her return with enthusiasm, embracing her as a beacon of hope and achievement.
