The victorious Indian women’s cricket squad will be hosted by Prime Minister Narendra Modi at his residence in New Delhi today, celebrating their incredible World Cup win. The team achieved this historic feat on Sunday, defeating South Africa in the final by 52 runs, a victory celebrated nationwide.
Upon their return to India, the team was met with enthusiastic crowds at the Indira Gandhi International Airport in New Delhi on Tuesday evening. This occasion will serve as an opportunity to honor each member for their exceptional contributions to the World Cup campaign.
The Prime Minister had previously commended the team’s performance, tweeting that their triumph would undoubtedly inspire young girls to pursue sports. He praised their skill, confidence, and tenacious spirit throughout the tournament. The team’s journey was particularly remarkable for its comeback nature; after suffering three defeats early on, they mounted a stunning charge, highlighted by their semi-final win against powerhouses Australia.
Chasing a record 339 in the semi-final, Jemimah Rodrigues scored an outstanding 127 not out, with crucial support from Harmanpreet Kaur (89). In the final, Shafali Verma’s 87 was instrumental in India posting 298. Though South Africa’s captain scored a century, the Indian bowlers, supported by brilliant fielding, secured the win by restricting them to 246.
