Dr. Tayyab Ikram, President of the International Hockey Federation, made an important announcement at a seminar organized around the theme ‘Grassroots to Glory-All About Hockey’ at the Rajgir Sports Academy. The event was facilitated by the Sports Department and the Bihar State Sports Authority. Dr. Ikram confirmed that the Rajgir Sports Academy will be officially recognized by the Asian Hockey Federation, with support from the International Hockey Federation. The seminar aimed to promote hockey development in Bihar and across India, with various experts leading discussions on key issues. Discussions included the progress of women’s hockey, the implementation of sports science and technology in the sport, the significance of coaching and trainers, establishing a solid foundation at the grassroots level, and the role of the state and central governments in advancing hockey.
The seminar, moderated by Ravindran Shankaran, Director General and Chief Executive Officer of the Bihar State Sports Authority, also addressed the query concerning why India relies on European coaches. Dr. Tayyab clarified that the issue isn’t a lack of talent among Asian coaches, but rather, a need to identify and provide them with adequate financial and infrastructural support.
The discussion touched upon the ‘Mashaal’ competition, Bihar’s initiative for the world’s largest sports talent search. Dr. Tayyab emphasized that to truly develop talent, there must be a shift in thinking, behavior, and sports philosophy from the top level down. The state government’s commitment to the development of sports and players was highlighted, recognizing the positive outcomes of its sports policies and programs, which included providing government jobs to medal-winning athletes, along with rewards and financial assistance. Additionally, support for young players comes in the form of the ‘Prerna Yojana’ under a sports scholarship program, providing up to Rs. 3 lakh for equipment, better nutrition, and training expenses. The Hero Asia Cup 2025, held in Rajgir, saw local children playing as ball boys and ball girls, highlighting the potential for future leaders in the sport. Encouragement was delivered to younger players to play with intelligence, hard work, and true dedication.
Pritam Rani, a former player of the Indian women’s team, stressed the need for grassroots development. Hockey India’s Secretary-General, Bhola Nath Singh, mentioned this type of conclave is a first for any international tournament. The Hero Asia Cup 2025 is underway in Rajgir, Bihar, from August 29 to September 7. The seminar was scheduled for a Friday when no matches were played.
