The appointment of Shubman Gill as India’s Test captain over Jasprit Bumrah has been a subject of intense discussion. While Bumrah had captained India in the recent Border-Gavaskar Trophy, including a win in Perth, his subsequent injury in the Sydney Test, which also caused him to miss the Champions Trophy, led to this debate.
Ricky Ponting, the former Australian cricket star, has come forward to back the BCCI’s decision. In an interview on ICC review, Ponting emphasized the importance of having a captain who is consistently available. He commended Shubman Gill’s leadership qualities, particularly as seen during the IPL 2025 season. Ponting encourages the selectors to offer long-term support to Gill, viewing this transition as well-timed for the Indian team. “I think it’s the right move,” Ponting stated, addressing the differing views. He also acknowledged Bumrah’s injury concerns. Ponting said it’s essential to avoid having a captain who is frequently unavailable. Therefore, he thinks it’s the right decision and suggested that the selectors should now fully support Gill and give him an extended run.
“I think leadership sits really well with him,” Ponting said about Gill’s performance. He also highlighted the significance of a captain who can contribute with the bat. Ponting believes that Gill’s performance in the IPL, in addition to his leadership skills, signals the right time for the change. He anticipates that Gill will evolve into a successful captain, scoring numerous runs in Test matches.
