In a significant development for Pakistan cricket, fast bowler Shaheen Afridi has been appointed as the new captain for the One Day International (ODI) format, taking over from Mohammad Rizwan. This decision was made following a high-level meeting involving the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) chairman, selectors, and white-ball head coach Mike Hesson. The move comes after a challenging period for the team under Rizwan’s leadership, which saw them win only one of their last nine ODI matches, including a winless run in the Champions Trophy. While Rizwan’s captaincy started positively with away series triumphs in Australia, Zimbabwe, and South Africa, the team’s performance declined. This downward trend, evident during the Champions Trophy and subsequent series against New Zealand and the West Indies, led to the decision to change leadership. The PCB confirmed Afridi’s appointment, ending speculation that arose from a lack of immediate confirmation regarding Rizwan’s role. Afridi’s previous captaincy experience, a T20I series against New Zealand, ended in defeat, a parallel to Rizwan’s recent experience. However, the hope is for a more successful outing this time around. Afridi’s current standing as Pakistan’s premier ODI wicket-taker and his consistent performances are expected to bolster the team. The coaching staff and selectors believe that the added responsibility will inspire him. His first assignment as ODI captain will be a three-match series against South Africa.
