The reign of ‘Number 45’ in Indian cricket, embodied by Rohit Sharma, is coming to a close. Rohit, who made the number 45 iconic in Indian cricket, remains a fan favorite. Having retired from T20 and Test cricket, his ODI career is also nearing its end. While selected for the ODI series against Australia, he lost his captaincy. A post by Rohit that was quickly shared, left fans surprised.
The BCCI announced the Indian team for the Australia tour on October 4, the major decision being the captaincy change. Rohit, who led India to a Champions Trophy victory in March, was removed as the ODI captain. This marked the end of Rohit Sharma’s captaincy across all three formats in just over a year. Shubman Gill, who had already taken the Test captaincy from Rohit, took over the leadership of Team India.
Following the captaincy announcement, an old tweet from the former Indian captain went viral. This post was from 13 years ago and referred to the numbers 45 and 77. Rohit’s tweet said, “The end of an era (45) and the beginning of a new one (77).”
Number 45 is linked to Rohit, while number 77 is associated with new captain Shubman Gill. Gill has worn the number 77 jersey since joining the Indian team. Rohit also had a connection with this number. The batsman had tweeted this on September 14, 2012, before the T20 World Cup. At that time, Rohit wore number 45, but his spot wasn’t secure, and his performance was not at its peak. He wore the number 77 jersey in that World Cup.
Rohit’s connection to number 45 is strong, making it easy to forget that he once wore the number 77. Now, by coincidence, the same number 77 is replacing him as the Indian captain after 13 years. After the post went viral, fans were amazed and joked that Rohit was predicting the future. Some fans suggested that Rohit had predicted his own future.
