The announcement of the Indian squad for the ODI series against Australia revealed a surprising decision: Shubman Gill was appointed as the ODI captain, replacing Rohit Sharma. This move has drawn criticism and confusion from many in the cricket world, given Sharma’s position leading up to the 2027 ODI World Cup.
Mohammad Kaif, a former Indian cricketer, shared his thoughts, focusing on Rohit Sharma’s contributions to the game. He stated that there was no need to hand everything over to Gill immediately, as his time would come. Kaif believed that Rohit Sharma deserved at least one more year as captain, looking towards the 2027 ODI World Cup. He referenced Sharma’s 16 years representing India, with a commendable record as captain winning 15 out of 16 ICC events, with the 2023 final as the only loss. Kaif also pointed out Sharma’s Player of the Match performance and victory in the Champions Trophy.
Kaif mentioned that Rohit stepped down after winning the World Cup to give opportunities to new players.
He highlighted the tradition in Indian cricket where players are allowed to continue as long as they perform, but this principle wasn’t applied in Sharma’s case. He also mentioned that Sharma mentored many players, but he was removed from captaincy ahead of the 2027 World Cup.
Rohit Sharma needs to perform consistently to get a spot in the 2027 World Cup squad. Chairman of Selectors Ajit Agarkar is yet to address long-term plans, the team’s future direction and if Rohit and Virat Kohli still feature in the team. The new generation seems to be on the horizon.
Kaif concluded that Shubman Gill has replaced the captain who gave India two ICC trophies in eight months. Gill, though young, can be a good captain, but Kaif questioned the timing. He felt that it was Rohit’s time to lead, but it was cut short.
