While Shreyas Iyer may not be in India’s T20 Asia Cup 2025 squad, his career seems to be advancing toward a significant role. Reports suggest that the skilled right-handed batsman is being considered as the next ODI captain once Rohit Sharma steps down.
Over the past four years, Iyer has established an impressive ODI record. Between 2021 and 2025, he averaged over 45, scored 14 half-centuries, and delivered in important moments – including critical performances during India’s 2023 ODI World Cup and 2025 Champions Trophy.
Importantly, Iyer has addressed India’s long-standing No. 4 position issue, a spot that had been problematic for the team. His ability to anchor an innings and then accelerate makes him one of the most reliable batters in the format.
Iyer brings captaincy experience to the table. He led Delhi Capitals to their first IPL final in 2020, won the trophy with Kolkata Knight Riders in 2024, and took Punjab Kings to the final in 2025. Former players often highlight his composed demeanor, his guidance for young players, and his strategic decision-making.
Rohit Sharma hasn’t yet revealed his ODI retirement plans, but the selectors appear to be preparing for a smooth transition, with the 2027 World Cup cycle approaching. If the plan goes according to schedule, Iyer could be the face of India’s next era in ODI cricket.
