Following a successful IPL season, Shreyas Iyer is reportedly in contention for the captaincy of the Indian white-ball team. Despite his team, Punjab Kings, not winning the IPL, Iyer displayed strong leadership qualities throughout the tournament. His previous captaincy for Kolkata Knight Riders, where he led them to victory, highlighted his leadership skills. Now playing for a new franchise, Iyer has once again proven his abilities as a batsman and captain.
“Right now he just plays ODIs but after this IPL we can’t keep him out of T20 internationals and even Tests. Plus he also has now officially joined the white-ball captaincy race,” an official reported.
In IPL 2025, Iyer was a standout performer, ranking second among his team’s leading run-scorers. He scored 604 runs in 17 matches, maintaining an average of over 50 per innings with a strike rate of 174.69. His best performance was against Gujarat Titans, where he scored 97 runs. Iyer’s captaincy record is also notable, with his teams winning a majority of T20 and List A matches. He is the only captain to lead a team to 3 finals in the White ball format.
