India’s Test skipper Shubman Gill has offered his perspective on the ongoing debate surrounding Mohammed Shami’s repeated exclusion from the Test squad. While praising Shami’s exceptional bowling abilities, Gill hinted that the team management is prioritizing a forward-looking approach, focusing on the current pace attack featuring talents like Akash Deep and Prasidh Krishna. Addressing the media before an upcoming Test match, Gill acknowledged the difficulty in leaving out a bowler of Shami’s experience and proven track record. He also emphasized the commendable performances of other bowlers who have stepped in during Shami’s absence.
“There aren’t many bowlers of Shami bhai’s quality. But when you look at the performances of others guys like Akash Deep and Prasidh and also what Siraj and Bumrah have done for us, it becomes a tough call,” Gill remarked during the pre-match press conference. He added, “It’s never easy when someone like Shami bhai has to miss out, but at the same time, we have to plan ahead.” Gill indicated that questions regarding fitness and selection are best directed towards the selectors for a clearer understanding. Mohammed Shami has been out of Test action since the 2023 WTC final due to fitness concerns. His last international appearance was during the ICC Champions Trophy 2025, and he was subsequently not picked for the limited-overs series against Australia. Information from a BCCI official suggests that Shami was requested to play for India A but did not, citing a need to further build his bowling stamina. Medical assessments reportedly raise questions about his capacity for long bowling spells, although the official stressed that communication channels have remained open. Demonstrating his enduring capability, Shami has been in stellar form in the Ranji Trophy 2025-26 season, capturing 15 wickets in three matches, including a five-wicket haul.
