The Indian squad for the forthcoming T20 International series against South Africa, commencing December 9, is under scrutiny, with Shubman Gill’s fitness being a primary concern. The selection committee is scheduled to meet in Raipur to make its final choices for the 15-man squad. Gill was forced to retire hurt due to a neck injury sustained in the Test series and has since been undergoing medical evaluation and rehabilitation, including at the National Cricket Academy. His ability to play in the T20Is is described as uncertain, with a decision expected soon due to the team’s assembly date. In Gill’s potential absence, the opening slot alongside Abhishek Sharma could be filled by either Sanju Samson or Yashasvi Jaiswal. Samson brings recent T20I experience, while Jaiswal represents a fresh face. Furthermore, the return of seam-bowling all-rounder Hardik Pandya to the T20I setup is highly anticipated. Pandya has recently displayed excellent form in domestic T20 cricket following his recovery from a quadriceps injury. His inclusion, alongside the overall squad selections, is seen as a strategic move by the selectors in preparation for the T20 World Cup. The series comprises five matches across various venues.
