India’s recent batting performance, particularly their inability to chase a small target against spin, has highlighted a potential gap between domestic prowess and international readiness. This has reignited the debate about prioritizing players who consistently perform in the gruelling Ranji Trophy. While other formats get significant attention, the Ranji Trophy remains a crucial proving ground for Test cricket. Here, we identify three players from the current domestic season whose form suggests they are ready to represent India in Tests.
Ravichandran Smaran of Karnataka is a young talent making waves at just 22. His first-class career is rapidly ascending, marked by two double centuries in the ongoing season. Smaran has amassed 1073 runs in 19 innings with an outstanding average exceeding 70, complemented by four centuries. His prolific scoring could offer a solution to India’s revolving door at the number three position.
Another batsman in superb touch is Yash Rathod from Vidarbha. He was a standout performer last season with 960 runs and has continued his excellent form this term, adding two more centuries to his tally. Rathod’s first-class career statistics are impressive, with 2318 runs at an average of 59.43, including nine hundreds. At 25, he is at an ideal age to transition to international cricket.
Danish Malewar, a 22-year-old from Vidarbha, is also impressing with his consistent batting. He has accumulated 1151 first-class runs at an average of 52.31, with three centuries. While selectors might look for more extensive performances over future seasons, Malewar’s current form makes him a player of considerable interest for the future of Indian Test cricket.
