The U19 Asia Cup is currently experiencing significant weather-related interruptions, with rain deluging Dubai and delaying the semi-final encounters. The potential for matches to be abandoned due to the conditions has opened up an interesting possibility for India’s progression.
Both the India-Sri Lanka and Pakistan-Bangladesh semi-finals are currently suspended as groundsmen grapple with waterlogged outfields. While a reduced-overs match remains a possibility, the threat of a complete washout looms large, potentially altering the tournament’s landscape.
Under the tournament’s regulations, if the first semi-final between India and Sri Lanka is declared abandoned, India will be declared the winner and will advance to the final. This is a direct consequence of India finishing at the top of their group during the league stage, holding a higher standing than second-placed Sri Lanka.
This same rule applies to the second semi-final. If the game between Pakistan and Bangladesh cannot proceed, Bangladesh, who topped their group, will advance to the final, leaving Pakistan, their group stage runners-up, eliminated.
For Pakistan, the rain is a major concern. A washed-out semi-final would end their U19 Asia Cup campaign. Sri Lanka also faces a similar fate if their match against India is abandoned. The Indian U19 team has displayed impressive form, remaining undefeated throughout the group stage, which included victories over the UAE, Malaysia, and Pakistan. Their path to the final might be paved by weather, but their overall performance has been commendable.
