A New York resident required a hospital stay of three weeks after following medical advice provided by the AI chatbot ChatGPT. The AI’s advice led to serious health complications. The individual asked ChatGPT how to replace salt in his diet, and the AI suggested using sodium bromide. This substance was once used in some medicines but is now considered toxic. The man began using sodium bromide instead of salt and did not seek medical counsel, resulting in adverse effects. These included extreme anxiety, mental confusion, and significant thirst. The man’s condition deteriorated to the point where he refused water, suspecting it was contaminated. Medical professionals treated him, restoring his electrolyte balance and allowing him to recover. The case emphasizes the need to consult with medical experts for health and nutritional advice rather than relying on AI.
