WhatsApp, the dominant player in instant messaging, may have met its match with the launch of Bitchat. Developed by Jack Dorsey, the app has just become available on the Apple App Store. The core appeal of Bitchat is its ability to function without an internet connection. This feature is made possible through Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) mesh networking, enabling secure, encrypted peer-to-peer messaging independent of Wi-Fi or mobile data. WhatsApp, on the other hand, mandates an active internet connection. Bitchat also prioritizes user privacy by not requiring a phone number or email address for registration. Messages are end-to-end encrypted and locally stored, with a self-destruct mechanism. This design could be critical during internet shutdowns or in areas with unreliable network infrastructure. Bitchat offers a compelling alternative for those seeking a private and accessible messaging experience.
