The Department of Telecommunications (DoT) is investigating the discontinuation of entry-level 1GB mobile data plans. The DoT has expressed concerns over the actions of major telecom operators, who have withdrawn their most affordable data plans while simultaneously increasing tariffs. The DoT has directed TRAI (Telecom Regulatory Authority of India) to investigate and submit a report.
Telecom operators reported the 1GB data plans were discontinued based on the analysis of user choices. One operator stated the removal was informed by prevailing market conditions and clarified some discontinued plans are still accessible through offline stores. Another operator discontinued its ₹249 plan, citing the move as a means to boost customer value after carefully considering market dynamics. Here are some affordable plans that offer solid value:
Jio’s ₹1,799 plan provides 84 days of validity, including 3GB of daily data. Any plan with 2GB or more data per day grants unlimited 5G data. The pack also offers 100 SMS per day, unlimited calling, and a Netflix Basic subscription alongside JioTV access. In a special offer for Jio’s 9th anniversary, users also get a 2-month trial of Jio Home and an extra 2% on Jio Gold.
Vodafone Idea’s ₹1,749 plan offers 1.5GB of daily data, plus an extra 30GB of data valid for 45 days, which exceeds the daily limit. This plan includes 100 SMS per day and offers 100 days more validity compared to Jio’s plan. Users also benefit from the ‘Binge All Night’ feature and weekend data rollover. However, Vi’s plans do not provide any complimentary OTT subscriptions, unlike Jio.
