The Karnataka High Court sided against X Corp on Wednesday, denying their petition that contested the Indian government’s power to issue content takedown orders. The court emphasized the necessity of regulating social media. According to the court, allowing social media to operate without regulation would be akin to giving a license to lawlessness, whereas regulated content helps to maintain order. The court stated that social media platforms cannot be exempt from the law. The court rejected X’s argument regarding free speech, noting that American legal standards are not applicable to Indian law. The court observed that X complies with rules in the United States but does not want to follow similar rules in India. The court determined that since X Corp seeks to operate in India, it must be subject to Indian laws.
