The online world is rife with scams, and authorities like Cyber Dost are working to keep the public informed and safe. The Ministry of Home Affairs’ Cyber Dost initiative regularly issues alerts to help people avoid cyber fraud. Despite these efforts, many still become victims due to the evolving tactics of cybercriminals. A new alert from Cyber Dost focuses on the NRI Gift Scam.
In this scam, fraudsters impersonate NRIs, cultivate friendships, and offer gifts. They then claim that these gifts are stuck in customs and request money from the victim. Cyber Dost has outlined how these scams operate and offers advice on how to stay protected. Common methods include sending friend requests, offering gifts, and then demanding money for customs charges.
To safeguard against this scam, do not send money for customs duties. Block and report any unsolicited messages that ask for money. If you are a victim, or suspect you are being targeted, report the incident immediately by calling 1930 or visiting cybercrime.gov.in.
