Digital payment users in India can now enjoy enhanced privacy and security with the option to create custom UPI IDs on Google Pay and Paytm. The previous system, which often tied UPI IDs to mobile numbers, presented potential privacy risks. The new features provide users the ability to design their own UPI IDs, thereby concealing their mobile numbers and boosting transaction safety. This development promises to strengthen user trust in digital payment platforms.
**Key Improvements in the New Feature:**
Most UPI IDs are directly linked to mobile numbers, which increases the chance of cybercriminals gaining access to private data. By creating a customized UPI ID, users can keep their mobile numbers hidden, which leads to safer transactions. This upgrade reinforces confidence in the digital payment ecosystem.
**Steps to Create a New UPI ID on Paytm:**
* Paytm provides a straightforward method for users to establish a custom UPI ID.
* Begin by opening the Paytm app and heading to the profile segment, then picking UPI & Payment settings.
* A list of all linked accounts and IDs will be visible there.
* Select ‘Create a new UPI ID’.
* Then, develop a new ID by combining alphanumeric characters.
* Furthermore, it’s possible to set a secondary UPI ID to avert payment failures.
**Benefit of Custom UPI on GPay:**
Google Pay has launched a similar function. As a result, customers will be able to use their own UPI ID instead of a mobile number. This update strengthens privacy and provides a more user-friendly and secure transaction environment.
**Changes to UPI Rules:**
The National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) has also updated UPI rules, discontinuing the P2P Collect Request system effective October 1, 2025. Consequently, users will no longer be able to send or accept Collect Requests through UPI. This adjustment focuses on direct transfers. The modification comes as the Collect Request tool was misused by fraudsters, who sometimes deceived users into authorizing requests, resulting in unauthorized money transfers.
