West Papua, Indonesia, experienced a 5.5 magnitude earthquake on Friday morning, as confirmed by the German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ). The quake’s epicenter was recorded at a depth of 10 kilometers. The relatively shallow nature of the earthquake raises the potential for significant impact, as the seismic waves reach the surface quickly.
Following the earthquake, local authorities initiated rescue and relief operations. Officials have also alerted the public to the possibility of aftershocks. Inspections are being conducted to assess the structural integrity of buildings and the welfare of residents. The intensity of the tremors caused alarm among people in some areas.
