Afghanistan experienced a major seismic event on Monday, with a 6.3 magnitude earthquake striking at a depth of 23 kilometers. The National Centre for Seismology (NCS) confirmed the details of the quake, which hit near the northern cities of Mazar-i-Sharif and Khulm. Preliminary assessments from the USGS suggest a high probability of considerable casualties and widespread damage, issuing an ‘orange alert’ that signifies a potential need for a national emergency response. Residents in Mazar-i-Sharif recounted harrowing experiences, waking to violent shaking and reporting structural damage. This significant tremor occurred shortly after a smaller, 3.9 magnitude earthquake at a shallower depth, which typically amplifies the risk and severity of aftershocks. The seismic waves from this powerful quake were also detected in neighboring Central Asian nations, including Tajikistan, Uzbekistan, and Turkmenistan.
