A devastating 6.3 magnitude earthquake struck Afghanistan early Monday, causing significant damage and loss of life. Authorities have confirmed at least seven deaths and over 100 injuries following the powerful tremor, which hit near Mazar-i-Sharif and Khulm. The quake’s epicenter was at a depth of 23 kilometers.
Home security cameras captured the harrowing moments as the earthquake violently shook buildings. The National Centre for Seismology provided the seismic details, while the United States Geological Survey (USGS) issued a dire warning. Their models estimate a high likelihood of numerous fatalities and widespread destruction, signaling the need for a comprehensive disaster relief effort.
Residents in neighboring countries, including Tajikistan, Uzbekistan, and Turkmenistan, also reported feeling the earthquake. This event follows a less intense 3.9 magnitude earthquake earlier, occurring at a depth of just 10 kilometers. The shallower the quake, the more destructive it can be to structures and communities.
