Seismic activity was once again recorded in Afghanistan on Friday, with a magnitude 4.1 earthquake reported. The National Center for Seismology (NCS) stated that the quake occurred at a substantial depth of 178 kilometers. The specific time of the event was 21:33:32 IST on November 21, 2025, with coordinates noted at 36.45 N latitude and 70.99 E longitude.
This recent seismic event was preceded by another tremor earlier the same day. A magnitude 4.3 earthquake struck at a depth of 170 km. The NCS had previously reported this earlier event, noting its location at 36.40 N, 70.52 E.
The heightened seismic activity serves as a somber reminder of the catastrophic 6.3 magnitude earthquake that hit northern Afghanistan on November 4th. That disaster claimed at least 27 lives and left over 950 people injured. The tremor’s shallow depth of 28 kilometers amplified its destructive impact, damaging infrastructure and historical sites.
Afghanistan’s vulnerability to earthquakes is deeply rooted in its geology. The nation lies on numerous fault lines where the Indian and Eurasian tectonic plates meet and collide, creating a highly seismically active region. The mountainous Hindu Kush area is a hotspot for such geological events. The constant threat of natural disasters, compounded by existing humanitarian challenges, severely impacts the country’s ability to recover and develop.
