A total internet blackout has been imposed in Afghanistan, as the Taliban enforces its restrictions targeting activities it deems “immoral.” Reports indicate a nationwide telecoms shutdown, with multiple networks across Afghanistan disconnected, and telephone services severely limited. This complete internet blackout affects the entire country, including the 43 million residents. Connectivity was severed in stages, culminating in the restriction of telephone services. This is the first time the entire country has faced such a shutdown since the Taliban seized power. This measure comes at a time when Afghanistan is in dire need of humanitarian aid, just weeks after a devastating earthquake. Online TV channel TOLO News has stated that authorities have issued a deadline for the shutdown of 3G and 4G internet services for all mobile phones. The Taliban has also recently restricted women’s access to work and education, meaning that many women and girls are reliant on online learning.
