A significant US report has leveled accusations against China, alleging the use of artificial intelligence to conduct a widespread disinformation campaign targeting the global defense market. The US-China Economic and Security Review Commission claims that China propagated AI-created fake images after India’s ‘Operation Sindoor’ with the explicit goal of promoting its J-35 fighter jet and diminishing the appeal of the French Rafale. This move is seen as an attempt to manipulate international perceptions of military capabilities.
The commission’s findings indicate that China utilized fake social media accounts to circulate deceptive visuals, suggesting its military hardware was responsible for downing aircraft. These activities were allegedly timed to coincide with heightened India-Pakistan tensions in May, serving as a platform to broadcast China’s defense strength and support its broader military expansion plans. These tactics are identified as part of China’s strategic ‘Gray Zone’ operations.
The report also delves into the intricate dynamics of the India-China border dispute, highlighting a divergence in their negotiation strategies. While China favors incremental agreements on border issues to facilitate trade, India insists on a comprehensive and lasting solution. The report underscores India’s growing apprehension regarding China’s actions along the border and notes the theoretical nature of existing economic and boundary management accords. A potential flashpoint for future tensions is identified as the succession of the Dalai Lama. The report also touches upon India’s diplomatic maneuvering in response to strained ties with the US.
