Amazon has suspended Ahmad Shahror, a Palestinian software engineer, for his opposition to the company’s agreement with the Israeli government. The suspension is linked to Shahror’s criticism of ‘Project Nimbus,’ a cloud computing project supplying AI and data center resources to Israel.
Amazon claimed Shahror violated company policies, but he argued for his right to protest. Shahror was employed at Amazon’s Whole Foods division in Seattle for three years and used internal channels and a letter to express his opposition to Project Nimbus.
Shahror’s suspension was prompted by his criticism of Project Nimbus, which he believes supports Israel. Amazon suspended the engineer for his public opposition to the company’s deal with the Israeli government.
Following his criticism, Amazon informed Shahror that his posts on internal Slack channels violated company policies. The Palestinian engineer was suspended for protesting the contract.
Shahror stated Amazon is suppressing Palestinian voices. A French employee was also fired for criticizing Israel on social media. Amazon has stated that it does not tolerate discrimination or threatening behavior. Previously, Microsoft also dismissed employees for protesting against aid to Israel.
