Virginia courts have approved the pre-trial release of Indian-American national security scholar Ashley Tellis, who was arrested on charges of unlawfully possessing top-secret defense documents. The 64-year-old expert, known for his extensive career advising on national security matters, will be released on a $1.5 million bond. Prosecutors had alleged that highly classified materials related to U.S. military capabilities were found at his residence. Tellis’ legal counsel countered these claims, arguing that the documents were merely residual work products from his long government service and did not constitute espionage. The defense team firmly denied any accusations of acting for foreign powers or engaging in clandestine meetings, including with Chinese officials, emphasizing the academic and transparent nature of his collaborations. Judge Lindsey Robinson Vaala’s decision to grant conditional release was based on assurances of Tellis’ full cooperation and his strong ties to the community, including over four decades of residence in the U.S. and his marriage to a U.S. citizen. His release is subject to strict measures: passport surrender, travel limitations, electronic surveillance, and restricted internet access. The preliminary hearing for this high-profile case is set for November 4, 2025.
