Bangladesh is grappling with the fallout from a helicopter purchase agreement with Russia, complicated by US sanctions. The Awami League government contracted for two helicopters, but the deal is now in jeopardy. The total cost was around Tk 4 billion, with a large portion already paid. These Mi-171A2 model helicopters were intended to aid in anti-terrorism operations and improve police work in distant locations. The US, however, imposed sanctions on Russian Helicopters, the manufacturer, causing delays and potentially preventing delivery. The dilemma involves choosing between financial losses resulting from canceling the deal and the potential for damaged relations with the United States if the deal goes through. The aircraft remain in Russia, accumulating maintenance costs. The Foreign Ministry is working to reassure the US that the helicopters are for civilian applications and disaster relief.
