The situation for young girls in Bangladesh is alarming, as 2025 sees a significant increase in sexual abuse cases. A recent report from Dhaka indicates that 306 cases of sexual assault against girls were documented from January to July 2025, a 75% increase compared to the previous year. Former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina recently highlighted the escalating issue of sexual violence against young girls in Bangladesh.
The report by N O Salish Kendra details the ages of the victims, bringing into question the efficacy of the law enforcement. The report states that 49 cases involve girls aged 0-6, 94 cases involve girls aged 7-12, and 103 cases involve girls aged 13-18. The ages of the victims were not disclosed in 60 cases.
The report also highlights the varied locations where these incidents occur. From January to July 2025, 22 cases were recorded in madrasas or educational institutions. Another 49 cases occurred on the streets. Police reports suggest that in many of the street-related cases, the girls were initially followed before being taken to a location where the assault took place.
The report further indicates that the police often fail to bring justice to the victims of sexual abuse. In 55 cases, the initial reports were dismissed, leaving the girls without recourse.
Besides young girls, disabled girls are also at risk. In June 2025 alone, 7 cases of rape against disabled girls were recorded. The Human Rights Commission has expressed its concern over the severity of the situation.
Police data shows that from 2014 to 2024, about 5,600 cases of sexual abuse against young girls were reported, averaging 560 cases per year.
The current trends in 2025 indicate that the number of cases of sexual abuse against young girls might break records this year.
