A climate of fear is intensifying for Hindu minorities in Bangladesh, underscored by the recent brutal lynching of Amrit Mandal. The 29-year-old Hindu man was tragically killed on Thursday in Rajbari by a mob that accused him of extortion. Witnesses describe a scenario where Mandal was surrounded, attacked, and beaten to death when he attempted to escape his assailants.
This incident follows closely on the heels of another horrific act of violence against a Hindu. Just days prior, Deepu Chandra Das met a similar fate, beaten to death by a mob in Mymensingh after unsubstantiated accusations of blasphemy. The escalating pattern of violence has drawn criticism, with some alleging a lack of protection for non-Muslim communities.
The recent surge in unrest is believed to be connected to the death of extremist leader Shariq Usman Hadi, which led to widespread protests and significant destruction of property, including attacks on Indian consulates and media organizations. While authorities have initiated investigations into Amrit Mandal’s death and made arrests in the Deepu Chandra Das case, the recurring atrocities highlight the precarious situation faced by Hindus in Bangladesh.
